Speak Up! Steer Your Career!

"We are not in the business of reading minds…"

A phrase I have heard quite a bit, and more recently, when Massiel Diez & I interviewed the Chief People Officer at SLB, Carmen Rando Béjar, as part of efforts to drive greater engagement and support for the female #field employees in the company. It speaks to the need to be intentional, mindful, strategic, and vocal about our #CareerDevelopment; to never sit back and just expect things to happen.

Carmen reminds us to speak up about what we want; to articulate our interests to our #managers and the organization - yet staying flexible enough to take on assignments that we may not have thought about, that come our way serendipitously, and trusting the system to enable our learning, enrichment, and growth. And, if I could add... never forget that your career growth is your #soleresponsibility!

As you go into the new week, I hope you keep these points in mind:

• Your bosses, leaders, or managers don’t know everything, including what matters most to you, what your broader career ambitions are, and what specific goals would bring you the most fulfilment. Expecting them to know those, without telling them, doesn’t serve you.
• It’s critical to take advantage of those #careerconversations or any great opportunity to let your them know about what (else) you can do, or learn in preparation, for your next role. Taking charge of your own development is very rewarding.
